Tooth Extractions Near You

Looking after your teeth is critical to your oral health. Having poor oral hygiene habits increases your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, and can ultimately lead to tooth loss. Other situations such as impacted wisdom teeth or overcrowding in the mouth can also cause a patient to need a tooth extraction. Markham Dental provides tooth extractions near you to help you regain optimal oral health conditions.

When are Tooth Extractions Needed?

Your dentist’s priority is to preserve and protect your natural teeth for as long as possible. In certain cases, an extraction is the only option. When your tooth is severely decayed, it is recommended that you get the tooth removed to prevent further damage to your jawbone or surrounding teeth. Other times when tooth extractions are recommended include:

  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted or growing in at an angle
  • Extra teeth causing overcrowding
  • To make more space for an orthodontic treatment
  • Damaged teeth

The Procedure for Tooth Extractions

If it is decided that a tooth extraction is the best course of action for you, your dentist will begin the procedure by thoroughly numbing your mouth. For a simple tooth extraction, your dentist will gently push your tooth back and forth until it is loose enough to be extracted. In some cases, a small incision may be made in your gums to access and remove the affected tooth.

The Recovery Process for Tooth Extractions

It is recommended that you take it easy for the rest of the day after getting a tooth extraction. You will be provided with gauze pads to use in the case of bleeding, and it is necessary that you eat soft foods and avoid using a straw for the first few days. If any blood clots form in your mouth, please do not dislodge them as they are necessary for your healing. Our team recommends that you gently rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution on the first day to ensure your mouth stays clean. Your dentist will provide you with any further instructions to make sure that your healing process is smooth and complication-free.
